Doctor's Orders: Benefits of Vacation
That Prove It's Good for You!

Feeling stressed out, fatigued, and weary? There's a slip of paper that can change all that.

No, it isn't a prescription. It's a plane ticket.

If you've been feeling overwhelmed lately, a vacation could be just what the doctor ordered. Turns out, time away can do wonders for your mental and physical health. It can also be the key that strengthens and deepens the important relationships in your life.

Today, we're sharing a few top benefits of vacation and why you should prioritize one today.

Ready to learn more? Let's take off!

1. It's a Mental Health Refresher

Stress rarely presents itself overnight. Rather, it builds up as deadlines loom, pressures mount, and we slowly become buried under daily expectations.

To relieve that burden, we have to remove ourselves from the environment. Have you ever tried to relax in the middle of a busy office with phones ringing, emails dinging, and co-workers chatting? It's impossible.

According to a recent survey by the American Psychological Association (APA), there are many mental health benefits of taking a vacation.

In fact, 68% of workers said that after taking time away, they returned to work in a more positive mood. In addition, 66% said they had more energy, 57% were more motivated, and 57% were less stressed.

If you've been snapping at your loved ones, feeling distant, and finding it hard to connect due to stress, this can be the ideal way to recharge.

The takeaway? Putting your toes in the sand is some of the best therapy around.

2. It'll Save Your Heart

Does the idea of a week in paradise make your heart skip a beat? Listen to it.

The relaxation you feel on vacation can do wonders to improve your cardiovascular health. This was discovered in large part through the landmark Framingham Heart Study.

Recognized as the longest-running research study centered on cardiovascular disease, the study concluded that men who didn't take a vacation for seven years were at a 30% higher risk of developing heart disease compared to men who took regular time away.

Moreover, women who skipped yearly vacations had eight times the risk of coronary heart disease or a heart attack than those who vacationed twice a year.

These statistics might be shocking, but they aren't scare tactics. They're simply a friendly nudge that it's time to get your blood flowing and get out there!

3. You'll Come Back Ready to Perform

Want to convince your boss that time away can actually amplify your productivity? Here are some numbers to share.

Audit firm EY (formerly known as Ernst & Young) found that employees who took the most vacation days had the best annual feedback. In fact, across the U.S. and Canada, they found that for every 10 hours of time off an employee took, their reviews were 8% higher.

They were also more likely to stick around. The study found that for every 40 hours of vacation time they took, each employee stayed with the company an additional eight months.

4. You'll Sleep Better

Are you used to checking your email one last time before turning in? Are you up late working, finding it difficult to turn off both your mind and your computer?

If so, you could be suffering from a range of sleep-related health concerns. Your brain may be foggy, your energy levels low, and your memory impaired. Vacations can change all of that.

When you don't have to punch a clock in the morning, you're more likely to sleep in and savor the day. You'll be able to reset that sleep pattern and enjoy a more restful slumber, both in the hotel room and back home.
